Tiwa Savage reveals why she initially disliked Mavin hit ‘Dorobucci’
Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has revealed that she wasn’t a fan of Mavin Records’ chart-topping hit Dorobucci when she first heard it.
In a recent interview with NotJustOk, Tiwa Savagerecalled that producer Don Jazzy had played the song’s early instrumental for her while they were in Dubai for her wedding. At the time, she had no idea it was a Mavin project, and she secretly thought it sounded bad.
“I don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy was playing the beat in our hotel during my wedding in Dubai. I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a terrible song,” Tiwa admitted.
Shortly after the wedding, Don Jazzy urged her to return to Nigeria to work on what he described as an important new record. Although she planned to continue her honeymoon, Tiwa eventually flew back and joined her labelmates in the studio.
To her surprise, the song had been transformed. “When I got back and heard the final version, I was shocked,” she said, adding that the finished Dorobucci sounded nothing like the rough version she’d heard earlier.
Tiwa confessed she was still skeptical and ended up being the last Mavin artist to record her verse. “Everyone else had already recorded their parts. I was just looking at them like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’” she said with a laugh.
Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time Tiwa underestimated one of her hits. She shared that she also didn’t like Eminado when she first recorded it. Both songs would later become massive hits, dominating charts across Africa and beyond.
Reflecting on the experience, Tiwa Savage praised Don Jazzy’s creative genius and vision, acknowledging how Dorobucci became a cultural anthem despite her early doubts. “We all know what happened to that record,” she said. “Don Jazzy just has that magic touch. I didn’t even know I’d end up on the song, but it turned out to be phenomenal.”
